Dear BID-Plymouth Community,
It is with great regret that I must inform you of the unexpected passing of Dr. Stephan Hochstin.
Dr. Hochstin joined the hospital’s medical staff in 1979 and was the longest tenured acting physician at our hospital. During his 41 years at the hospital, he became a well-respected clinical leader, led the Cancer Center for many years, and served as president of the hospital’s medical staff.
Many colleagues regarded Dr. Hochstin as a “go to” for opinions on hematological and oncology issues and for general medical practice questions. His work ethic was exemplary and he was often the last clinic physician found on the medical floors at the end of the day. He developed a large patient practice with many being in his service for decades. He was devoted to his patients and, in return, they were steadfastly loyal to him. They understood that he would do the utmost to care for them.
Dr. Hochstin was singularly instrumental in the initiation and development of our Cancer Center. Among many other accomplishments, he was responsible for our participation in national clinical trials, the first of many College of Surgeons accreditations (often with commendation), and the recruitment of many successful staff members. It is not hyperbole to suggest it would be unlikely the Cancer Center would exist in its current form, having garnered its excellent reputation, without his leadership, vision, and wise counsel.
It is understood by staff who have worked with him over the years that Dr. Hochstin, the physician, cannot be replaced. Stephan Hochstin, the man, will be remembered fondly for his gentle demeanor with patients, his arid sense of humor, his lofty clinical standards, and unstinting generosity to patients and staff alike.
We remain in deep debt for his contributions to our hospital and the community. To his family and those close to him, we offer our profound condolences.
Dr. James Matthew Koomey
